According to the Maryland Department of Planning, Howard
County, Maryland had a population of about 264,000 in July
of 2003. Many people, including Realtors, are unaware that
Howard County has no incorporated towns. Columbia is actually
a very large planned homeowners' association. The other
most significant post office addresses in Howard County
are Elkridge, Ellicott City, Clarksville, Fulton, Dayton,
Jessup, northern Laurel, Glenelg, Glenwood, Highland, Marriottsville
and West Friendship. However, there are many others.
Originally part of Anne Arundel County, Howard County
was designated Howard District in 1839, for John Eager
Howard, the fifth governor of Maryland. Howard County became
the 21st of Maryland's 23 counties in 1851, with the county
seat at Ellicott Mills. Today it is Ellicott City.
Howard County has much of which to be proud. It has a
reputation for the best public school system in the State
and it’s per household income is the highest in Maryland.
Finally, it contains a vibrant cultural center in Columbia,
a developed suburban area in the eastern side of the County
and a more rural western half. Some of its landmarks are
the historic downtown, the Mall in Columbia and the Merriweather
Post Pavilion.
