Columbia is a medium-sized city of about 97,000 people
located in the heart of Howard County, bisected by route
29. This planned community is an outstanding place to buy
a home, with its many cultural attractions and excellent
location.
From its inception in the early 1960s, Columbia was seen
in terms of human values, not just in terms of economics
and engineering. Columbia is a planned community that was
designed to eliminate uncontrolled sprawl and the inconveniences
of then current sub-division design. But even more, Columbia
was built on the premise that a community could foster
a true coming together for all of its residents. Columbia
would be a better place to live and work: a place for all
people, embracing different races, religions and income
groups. This vision is reflected in Columbia's physical
layout and in many innovative programs whose benefits residents
enjoy today.
Since 1967, The Howard Research and Development Corporation,
an affiliate of The Rouse Company, has developed Columbia
into a community filled with social and cultural outlets,
jobs, quality education and abundant recreational opportunities.
In all, Columbia has been a model for other planned communities,
adding greater convenience to everyday life.
To achieve these goals, the city's master plan called
for a series of self-contained villages, around which day-to-day
life would revolve. Today, nine such villages are comprised
of several neighborhoods, schools, a shopping center, community
and recreational facilities, and homes. Virtually every
basic service and amenity is within easy reach, whether
you choose to drive, ride a bike or even walk.
