According to the Maryland Department of Planning, Anne Arundel County, Maryland had a population of about 506,000 in July of 2003. There are many distinct areas of Anne Arundel County, so many people understand them in terms of the unincorporated towns. Anne Arundel County has only two incorporated municipalities and only one (Annapolis) is significant in size. The other most significant post office addresses for Anne Arundel County are Severna Park, Arnold, Pasadena, Odenton, Gambrills, Severn, Ft. Names like the South River, the Magothy River, the Severn River and others are as significant to some as the main roads and highways. Indeed, Anne Arundel County claims more than 534 miles of coastline, including the Chesapeake Bay itself. Thus, Anne Arundel County has a reputation for water sports such as boating, fishing, crabbing, water skiing, sailing and swimming. Aside from water sports, the County has an older suburban area south of Baltimore. To the south and west are more rural areas as well as towns like Crofton, that are arguably oriented more to Washington, D.C.
